It seems this little project has grown it's own wings and is now popping up all over the place. Having recently been featured on The Loop as well as Inkable doing a write up. So I thought I'd talk about the projects roots and show some of the process.
In 2013 I met a beautiful couple who were celebrating the (very early) birth of their daughter Alice. As I chatted away it became apparent that they were not first time parents. Their son Max was born early after a spontaneous preterm labor. As a result his little body was underdeveloped and he died not long after birth. The gravity of this parents tale shook me deeply, so when they asked for my assistance to set up a research fund in remembrance of Max, I jumped into action and The Smallest Things was born.
In 2014 I came up with a fund raising idea. I pitched the idea to the clients and with their support, began drawing 26 Australian Animals in a minimalist style. I simplified everything. Rounding off shapes and features whilst using a reduced colour pattern for pattern and consistency.
The animals were turned in to an A-Z poster and to date have raised hundreds of dollars toward research into how to prevent and treat the causes of premature labour and birth at the royal hospital for women.
